Welcome to Durand-Evans, D.C.
This web page is primarily designed for our patients to give a further understanding of the techinques and treatments that are available. The chiropractic technique that we practice is called Sacro Occiptal Technique which founded and developed by Dr. Major Bertrand De Jarnette, D.C.
Dr. Evans and myself had the great fortune and honor to know and study with Dr. De Jarnette for 16 years.
Balancing the body energy flow is fundamental in any form of healing. An important aspect of healing is addressing any structural imbalances of the body if they are present. Once the structural problems are brought under control, the ability to balance the body energy by whatever means is greatly enhanced.
Specialties include:
1. Sacro Occipital Technic (SOT)
2. SOT Cranial Technique
3. TMJ (temporal mandibular joint)
4. Homeopathy
5. Nutrition
Overview of Sacro Occipital Technic
This is a quote form Dr. De Jarnette at the Sacro Occipital Technic Seminar in 1978: "Man is a structure of multiple and complex units which, when in proper sequence, causes man to have perfect health. But let one unit of this complex structure subluxate, and the total man manifests complex problems."
To understand SOT one must first understand, that good health must have proper brain and spinal cord function. One of the most important aspects of this, is proper CSF (Cerebral Spinal Fluid) flow around the brain and spinal cord region. To achieve this goal, one must have minimal restriction of the dural membrane (meningeal membrane). Since the dural membrane is attached to the cranial bones, first and second cervical vertebra and the sacrum, SOT strives to restore normal positioning and movement of these bones to achieve minimal restriction of the dural membrane thus optimizing CSF flow.
SOT greatest achievement is the development of the Category Blocking System in analyzing and treating the human frame. This unique system of treatment utilizes blocks (triangular shaped wedges) to create torsional forces to reposition the pelvic girdle (specifically the sacro-iliac joint). This is extremely effective in creating the proper position of the sacro-iliac joint which then allows optimal CSF flow. The blocking procedures coupled with SOT Cranial Technic is most effective way to optimize CSF flow we have ever seen.
Category Blocking System
The category system describes three distinct problems which can occur in the cranial sacral region. Category I refers to a problem in which the cranial- sacral mechanism is not moving in the normal reciprocal action causing associated dural membrane restrictions. Category II refers to a sprain/strain of the sacro-iliac ligaments, with associated cranial sutural involvement of the dural membrane. This condition can contribute to a TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint) problem. The Category II condition is the most common problem we treat and is primarily identified utilizing the arm fossa test. Category III refers to problems in the lumbar region related to the disk and facet structures.
For each category there a unique blocking position for the pelvic bones. Category I patient is face down with the blocks placed under the pelvis to restore proper reciprocal action of the cranial sacral mechanism. Category II the patient is face up, with the blocks placed under the hip bones to create torque in the sacro iliac joint to reposition the hip bones. This allows the sacro iliac ligaments to shorten and start healing. Category II blocking procedure will normally take 2-5 minutes. Category III is face down with position of the blocks used to help release tension of the lumbar spine.
In all cases for the blocking procedures, gravity and the patient's breathing is the primary force used to reposition the pelvis and lumbar region. There are gentle techniques used to enhance and support the blocking procedures for each Category. Ex: psoas adjustment, Basic Two, ilio-femoral adjustment, Cranial Sutural Technique, stair step, etc.
CMRT
Dr. De Jarnette was also an Osteopath, so he had privileges at the local Osteopathic hospital and was able to develop techniques to treat the organs of the body in a hospital setting. He wrote a book called Bloodless Surgery which examines in detail, techniques to release adhesions and increase blood flow to the organs, this evolved into CMRT (Chiropractic Manipulative Reflex Technique), which we utilize in our treatment today. CMRT includes Occipital Line Fiber Analysis which was developed to diagnose which spinal levels and associated organs are to be treated.
SOT Cranial Technique
Cranial technique as taught by Dr. De Jarnette derived its origins from Dr. Sutherland, D.O. an Osteopath. Dr. De Jarnette had personal experience learning cranial adjusting and manipulation from Dr. Sutherland in the 1920's while he attended Osteopathic school. With the development of the SOT Category System, Dr. De Jarnette was able to incorporate specific Cranial techniques associated with each Category plus Cranial Dental Specifics. This has evolved into SOT Cranial Technique which incorporates Category I Cranial Technique, Category II Cranial Technique and Category III Cranial Technique.
TMJ
Treatment of the TMJ (temporal mandibular joint) is an integral part of Category II Cranial Technique. In our clinical experience, if a patient has a TMJ problem it must be addressed if the Category II is to hold its correction. A majority of the time, TMJ problems can be managed by Category II Cranial Technique and blocking procedures. However if the TMJ problem is severe enough, a TMJ Appliance (night guard) made by dentist, may be necessary to assist in controlling the problem. In a rare number of cases, major changes to the TMJ may be necessary (braces, extractions, surgery, etc.).
Homeopathy
A medicinal treatment based on the principal of "like cures like". To understand this statement, one must first have an understanding that all living things have an energy field (energy body) incorporated with it. Humans have an energy body which guides and directs all of the biological functions. Homeopathic medicine works in the energy realm to create changes in the energy body, which then influences the physical (biological) body. For some people the concept of energy body is a foreign concept, however even allopathic medicine is beginning to accept the idea. This is shown by their increasing acceptance of acupuncture, which is an energy based treatment concept. In our office, it is interesting to note that, an increasing percentage of homeopathic remedies are utilized to neutralize toxic reactions from the environment vs treating to restore normal biological balance.
Nutrition
"Find a simple diet that works for you and stay on it."
This quote encompasses in a nutshell what nutrition is about. In our clinical experience eating simply takes a lot stress off of the digestive system. The quote "that works for you" encompasses a great deal in terms avoiding foods which cause distress, allergic response and toxic reactions. The term diet for us also includes nutritional supplements to help support and optimize the biological systems. Simple rules we advise: Eat Organic, less carbohydrates, smaller portions, more veggies and less red meat.
